My Current Home Workout Favorites

As you know I am a big Jillian Michaels and Barre fan....

If you're looking for a quick (but not easy) and effective workout, she is your gal. It's all about maximum effort for a minimum amount of time.
These are great strength/cardio workouts:
Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 - 4 workout levels 1-4
Jillian Michaels Shred It with Weights - 2 workouts using kettle bells or a hand weight

If you are just getting started - took a workout break, just had a baby - OR you hit a plateau and need something new, try one of these:
Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown- more of a power yoga variety than an "ohm meditation" yoga
(I must say this is not your typical yoga, it's a yoga for the un-yogi)
Xtend Barre: Lean and Chiseled - great toning, builds long, lean muscles

(This is the only PB DVD I have tried and I have been to classes and love them. I'm sure all of their DVDs are good and for $14.99 a pop, verses $20+ per live class, they're a great deal!)

If you are very limited on time, don't skip the workout!! Remember something is better than nothing! Try one of these FREE you tube Tone It Up Videos:
These trainers, Karena and Katrina, also have a great health/fitness blog: Tone It Up

Happy Home-Working Out! <3

The Letter F!

Baby Boo wearing her fish dress :)
This week we have been studying the letter F and Fish.
We have also taken a Five in a Row approach to teaching. Five in a Row is a style of teaching that incorporates reading a book five days in a row and completing crafts, projects, etc. that correlate with the story. Five in a Row has a list of books (all awesome classics) that they recommend and give suggestions for projects to go along with them. We are using this style of teaching with our own choices of books.
The books we've read this week are Rainbow Fish and Jonah and the Whale. Rainbow Fish teaches us that it is OK to be different and the story of Jonah teaches us that we need to obey God and we cannot run away or hide from God.

On Wednesday we visited Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay. The girls had a great time! G was very interested in the various types of fish and sea creatures. Her favorites are Lion Fish, sea turtles, jelly fish, and of course "Dory" (Regal Blue Tang Fish) and "Nemo" (Clown Fish).
We did the experiment "Sink or Float" which I found here on Mommy Moment one night in the bath tub. It was fun having G guess or form a hypothesis about what she thought would sink versus float and then testing it out. Using a cup was a tricky one- it floats when empty then sinks after it is filled with water. I also asked her if she sinks or floats.... made her think!

Today we had our official weekly school day. We started by playing this fun fishing game by Circo from Target.
The fish have magnets on them as does the fishing pole. It was good practice on colors also.
Then we sang some songs, including Laurie Berkner's "Goldfish" song. Laurie Berkner is an awesome children's musician who sells CDs and DVDs of her songs.

We read about Rainbow Fish again and then we made a glittering Rainbow Fish:
All this took was blue paper plates, tissue paper, aluminum foil, elmer's glue, paint brushes, and googly eyes. It was easy and fun!
The next thing we did was some Goldfish math! I got the idea and worksheets from Confessions of a Homeschooler. G always asks for these little boxes of Goldfish crackers at Fresh & Easy (my favorite grocery store by the way) and she was so excited to see I finally caved in and got some! They were only $0.89 too! The girls had fun deciding which fish was the longest, which was the shortest, and which was the medium-sized one. Then we used the Goldfish crackers to measure and count how long each fish was. And the bonus: you get to eat the crackers and color the coloring page when you're finished!
Do-a-Dot Art. Attention Moms of preschoolers and kids almost any age: If you do not have Do-a-Dot Art markers yet you need to get some! These are so fun for kids and adults of all ages. They are paint-like without all the mess. I printed this "F" page from Confessions of a Homeschooler but you can also find Do-a-Dot Art coloring books online or at Michael's.
We read the story of Jonah again and watched a short DVD video about Jonah (about 9 minutes) that I picked up from the Dollar Tree- great find! It tells the story with words (great reading practice) and has a couple cute songs too. They still had some left at the Dollar Tree when I was there yesterday. We discussed how we must obey God (and our Mommy and Daddy) and that we cannot run or hide from God, He sees everything.
We practiced drawing fish and the letter F on a white board, which is really fun, but a little messy! Here G is with the "F"s she made all by herself and signing the letter F!
Mama is so proud!
Our final project was making Rainbow Fish Cookies!
*Quick tip: to make quick and easy (yet unhealthy) cookies use a box cake mix, 1 egg, and 1 room-temperature stick of butter.
Okay so they did not turn out very fish-looking but the girls did not seem to mind! ;-)

Ladybug Hike

To correlate with our insect, ladybug, butterfly theme we went on an awesome Ladybug Hike last week with Learning As You Grow.

It was at Calico Basin and was the perfect little hike for the little tikes. G enjoyed seeing a butterfly (which landed on her!), a beetle, petroglyphs, sparly sand, flowers, spider webs, and of course ladybugs! The class also included a magnifying glass, ladybug crafts, a net, ladybug habitat and ladybugs!

The Letter I!

In light of Spring and the gorgeous weather we are learning about the Letter I for Insect!
We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Butterflies, and 10 Little Ladybugs. And we discussed metamorphosis, cocoons, and other fun stuff!
We made a ladybug craft and a butterfly craft.
We also read a story about the Helpful Ladybug, courtesy of Danielle's Place. This story was a great lesson in learning to be helpful and kind. I highly recommend Danielle's Place for lessons and craft ideas.

And we finished the morning off by making butterfly cookies, they quite enjoyed this ;-)
G and I will be going on a Ladybug Nature Hike with Learning As You Grow on Thursday, which will fit in perfectly with this week's theme. Learning As You Grow is an awesome organization here in Las Vegas that has art and science classes, hikes, P.E., and other fun things for preschoolers and homeschoolers to participate in. We are looking forward to trying our first activity with them.

Run for God

Have you ever heard of this AWESOME study, Run for God???

I would really like to try and organize a study for this at my new church. PLEASE PRAY for me to find a place and people to do this with.

It is a 12-week study in which you are learning the Word of God while training together for a 5K race. At the end of the study your group runs a 5K race together; it can be a "Run for God" race or any 5K race.

This is awesome-- again prayers are greatly appreciated-- and if you are local I hope you will join me!! I am thinking it would be a good thing to start in the Fall when the weather cools down and then run the race sometime in December.

Easter Math

I stole this concept from Fun & Engaging Activities for Toddlers...

I numbered eggs 1-12 and also numbered the egg carton.
G was able to match the numbers. Then we put that number pieces of macaroni inside the egg, which doubles as a fun little instrument ;-).
We played a game of closing our eyes, picking an egg and then finding his/her "home", which quickly turned into make believe of the same color eggs being Mommy/Baby and finding their homes. Finally we got them all tucked in and they "went to bed", according to G.

The skills practiced were counting, matching, number awareness, and colors.

This was a very fun, inexpensive, and easy activity.... This may just stick around after Easter is over. :)

The Letter B!

Last week we started home school with the letter "E" and made Easter eggs and a Stained Glass Cross and Egg. G has her two friends "M" and "L" over for school every Monday morning and then we are doing field trips throughout the week for lots of hands-on learning and using teachable moments whenever we can.

B
Today we did the Letter B! I had everyone wear the color Blue, to keep with the theme.
We read the books Guess How Much I Love You, Bee & Me, Colors Everywhere, Bunny My Honey, and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We sang several songs including "The Wheels on the Bus", ABCs, and "Ba Ba Black Sheep".
We made Easter Egg Bunnies and decorated little Bags "Bunny Bags" with foam stickers.
We made Aussie BITES, which are made with ingredients including Butter, Brown Sugar, and Honey (made by bees!). The girls had so much fun helping me make those.
While the Aussie Bites were baking we worked on categorizing by color, animal, and size using Lakeshore Critter Counters. The girls found it very easy to sort by color, a little more challenging to sort by animal and to separate big animals and little animals was the most difficult. They wanted to keep the "babies and their mommies" together.

We made homemade bubble juice and blew bubbles outside where we happened to see a ladyBUG. The girls ran around outside pretending to be things that fly- Bumble Bees, LadyBugs, Butterflies, and Airplanes.
The girls celebrating the ladBug they found!
Then we finished by singing more songs.

We had so much and I am enjoying learning right alongside the girls as they learn. It has been really good for G to have M and L over as she is learning a lot
about sharing, taking turns, and patience.

Ok now on to nap time and Mommy trying out my new workout video that just arrived from Amazon! So excited to try my just released Xtend Barre: Lean & Chiseled DVD! Anyone ever heard of the Barre Method (hey I'm keeping with the theme of the letter B today- woo hoo!)? As in the ballet barre? The idea is to give you a dancer's body without being a dancer. Let's see how that goes...
